     Discovering Churches

In the Apennine territory between the Reno, Setta and Panaro valleys there are numerous records of a rich historical past. In particular, the churches not only witness the faith of the local people, but also the religious and secular power they were an expression of.
Religious architecture started to develop in this area during the Middle Ages, in particular during the Fourteenth century. Buildings were partially destroyed by the war and over time and have been renovated during recent years. In the most ancient buildings there are craft and artistic works: from architecture techniques to sculptures and paintings. They belong in particular to the “Romanesque” period. In fact, this area is rich in valuable and harmonic buildings built thanks to the art and ability of 'maestri comacini': Lombard architect-bricklayers that, from the Tenth century, began to work in the centre of Italy. Some churches were built before the year One Thousand, that is to say before the cathedral in Modena, a Romanesque cathedral par excellance.
The Romanesque style is characterized by basic features, but in these areas it is also possible to find other churches, dating from the Seventh and Eighth century, enriched by stucco and paintings. The synthesis between art and religion is represented also by the valuable architecture of some little oratories and recent churches
