     Discovering Castles

The history of the hill and mountain areas between the Provinces of Modena and Bologna has been characterized for many centuries by contrasts between their rulers.
In these “borderlands” there have always been battles and long sieges. They started when these mountains were the borderline between Byzantine exarchate and Longobard lands. Then there were battles between the Papacy and the Empire and between the Municipalities of Bologna and Modena.
Its history has inevitably influenced the architectural style of the civil and military construction industry, which must always satisfy defensive needs.

While in the Panaro valley it is still possible to find some castles. The Reno valley is characterized by fortress-houses and tower-houses and, as a consequence, by ancient and widespread autonomous settlements. In the province of Modena there are some buildings of this kind. As a consequence, there has always been a strong historical-cultural contamination between these valleys.
All the kinds of architecture that developed during the Middle Ages and Renaissance have been particularly influenced by Romanesque religious buildings. The construction techniques imported by “mastri comancini”, which were used during the Sixteenth century were also very important. It was a rural architecture whose main feature was gouged sandstone. At the end of the Fifteenth century, defensive needs were not so strong and architecture started to be refined: decorations and dovecote towers started being used.
